AFF played a visible and catalytic role in the 2025 World AIDS Day commemoration — which also served as Zambia's official launch of long-acting injectable Lenacapavir, and marked our first participation in a national World AIDS Day event. Our contribution included community mobilisation, media engagement, training of healthcare providers and mobilisers, and developing information, education, and communication materials for the rollout.
Officiated by the Honourable Minister of Health and aligned with the global theme "Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response," the event signalled a significant expansion of HIV prevention options in Zambia — with grateful acknowledgement of AVAC's instrumental support.
With support from the International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM), an affiliate of Population Council, Ascend Futures Foundation collaborated with the Ministry of Health and the National AIDS Council to support the launch of the dapivirine vaginal ring as an additional HIV prevention option in Zambia.
The launch marked an important milestone in Zambia's efforts to expand HIV prevention choices, particularly for women who may benefit from discreet, woman-controlled prevention options. For AFF it also represented a significant step in our continued advocacy for the introduction and uptake of innovative biomedical HIV prevention technologies, while ensuring communities are informed, engaged and able to participate meaningfully in decisions that affect their health.
The launch brought together senior government leadership, development and implementing partners and other key stakeholders, including the Minister of Health, Honourable Alex Katenkwa, and the National AIDS Council Director General, Dr Mosokotwane. Following the launch, AFF has continued to support awareness and community engagement around the PrEP ring.
