As Zambia prepares for the roll-out of the PrEP Ring in 2025, a groundbreaking initiative has placed young people at the heart of community engagement. Recognizing the crucial role of youth in driving awareness and fostering acceptance of new health interventions, two young individuals from Southern Province were selected as PrEP Ring Champions to spearhead this movement.

Ring Champions: The Faces of Change

These dynamic youth leaders were carefully chosen to represent their communities and serve as key advocates for the PrEP ring. Tasked with raising awareness within their respective Communities, the Ring Champions play a pivotal role in educating their peers, community members, and healthcare providers about the benefits and proper usage of this innovative HIV prevention tool yet to roll out.

Mentorship and Capacity Building

To ensure their effectiveness, the PrEP Ring Champions receive continuous mentorship and support from the project lead at Ascend Futures Foundation. This mentorship includes training on sexual and reproductive health, communication strategies, and community mobilization techniques. By equipping them with the necessary knowledge and skills, the initiative empowers these young leaders to engage with their communities confidently and address misconceptions surrounding the PrEP ring.

Reaching Adolescent Girls and Young Women

One of the primary objectives of this initiative was to ensure that adolescent girls and young women, who are disproportionately affected by HIV, were well-informed and prepared for the introduction of the PrEP Ring. Through outreach activities, interactive sessions, and peer-led discussions, the Ring Champions help create safe spaces for young women to ask questions, express concerns, and understand how the PrEP Ring could fit into their HIV prevention choices.

A Step Towards a Healthier Future

The engagement of young leaders in this initiative reflects a broader commitment to youth participation in public health interventions. As Zambia moves closer to the official roll-out of the Dapivirine vaginal ring in 2025, the efforts of the Ring Champions will continue to resonate within their communities, paving the way for greater acceptance and utilization of this life-changing technology.

Through innovative community-driven approaches like this, the fight against HIV in Zambia gains new momentum, ensuring that young people are not just beneficiaries but active change-makers in shaping a healthier future.
