Introducing the Dapivirine Vaginal Ring — Expanding Prevention Choice for Women and Girls in Zambia
As Zambia moves forward with the HIV Prevention Roadmap 2025–2030, we are excited to accelerate community preparedness for the future introduction of the Dapivirine Vaginal Ring (DVR), a groundbreaking HIV prevention option designed specifically for women and adolescent girls.
For too long, women and girls have carried a disproportionate burden of HIV risk, often with limited prevention methods they can fully control. The DVR offers a discreet, self-controlled and woman-centred option, marking a major step toward strengthening autonomy and expanding HIV prevention choice.
We are thrilled that the Dapivirine Vaginal Ring will be offered by Planned Parenthood Zambia, a significant milestone that will empower women and girls with prevention options that align with their needs and lifestyles.
At Ascend Futures Foundation, we remain committed to ensuring that women and girls are well-informed about the ring , its benefits, how it works and where it will be accessed. We will continue to drive awareness, demand creation and community engagement, as consistent and correct use of the DVR can improve prevention outcomes and reduce new HIV infections among women and girls in Zambia.
The one-month ring is on the market, with a three-month ring and future multi-purpose prevention combinations (HIV + contraception + STIs) on the horizon. This innovation holds tremendous promise for enhanced protection and integrated sexual and reproductive health options for women and girls.
To achieve this, collaboration remains key. We are committed to working with partners to support rollout efforts because prevention tools only create impact when they reach the people who need them most.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to our Donor and Partner, the International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM), an affiliate of the Population Council, for their leadership, research and continued support in making this innovation a reality for women and girls.
The Dapivirine Ring is more than a product; it is progress, autonomy and choice.
